The Xmas tree

A magnificent tree from our forests will be erected at the centre of the Grand-Place, making this exceptional place one of the numerous unmissable attractions of the Winter Wonders. A present from the Walloon Region to the City of Brussels, this Norway Spruce (picea abies), after having been freshly cut the day before, will be transported to Brussels in a special convoy and mounted on 22 November, beside the traditional full-size manger. Measuring 22 meters, this sumptuous conifer comes from western Hertogenwald. This is a forest managed according to the principles established by PEFC, an NGO which ensures the balance between the economic, ecological and social functions of the forest.

The decorations will be brought to Brussels with the help of four trucks on 24 and 25 November. No less than eight people will adorn the tree with almost 200 white and blue baubles, a white tinsel wreath of 1.8 km and forty blue pearl lights. This gala array represents the colours of Finland, this year’s guest country of honour.
This festive year-end symbol will take centre stage of the sound and light spectacle which visitors can enjoy starting from 30 November during the inauguration of the Winter Wonders, at about 5:30 pm.

(*) PEFC is an NGO which is active in the certification of durable forest management. The label guarantees that the tree comes from a sustainably-managed forest.

The Skating Rink

For the second year in a row, the skating rink will be covered to improve comfort, and the skaters will be accompanied by competent guides.

The little ones can try out skating completely safely in a dedicated 60m² zone. Skates which can be attached to shoes will also be available. Parents or guardians can access the ice without skates to assist their children if necessary.

No reservation is required except for schools on 18 and 23 December, only in the morning.
