Sustainability in Brussels

The City of Brussels and the organizers have made clear their commitment to sustainability.

Use of reusable cups (launched over ten years ago), improved accessibility to sites for disabled visitors, recycling scheme, review of mobility, ‘happy team’ serving visitors, various awareness-raising campaigns, collaborations with local groups and artists…

Brussels Major Events is also working on new measures to introduce at the next Winter Wonders. It covers harassment in public places, switching to reusable tableware (as well as cups), food waste, dry toilets and alternatives to nonrecyclable packaging.

Reusable cups

The City of Brussels and the organizers have clearly stated their ambition to reduce the amount of waste generated by public events and so improve litter levels.

For the last ten years, wineglasses, champagne flutes and other recipients have been replaced by reusable cups. A €1 deposit is required for each one.

The initiative cuts the amount of waste by around two tonnes.

Keeping Brussels tidy

Recycling areas are available at every site to collect stallholders’ waste and direct it to the right facility.

Nearly 150 recycling bins are emptied in collaboration with City Hall’s highway teams, who are with us every day, to keep the event looking its best. The route is first cleaned daily by mechanized teams and then mobile teams step in. Services are provided until 20:00 in the week and until 22:00 at weekends.
