Sustainability

The City of Brussels commits to sustainability

The City of Brussels is firmly committed to sustainability. For several years now, Brussels Major Events (non-profit organisation) has continued its efforts to make the events it organises as sustainable as possible.

Energy initiatives

  • Use of LED bulbs for all Winter Wonders lighting.
  • Raising awareness among traders about reducing energy consumption.
  • Since 2012, a ban on electric heaters inside traders’ chalets.
  • Since 2021, removal of outdoor heaters from terraces.

Zero waste and reusable materials

  • Since 2016, use of reusable cups throughout the Christmas Market.
  • For several years, recycling of the Christmas tree: donated to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts for transformation into a work of art, repurposed into benches and tables by a Belgian craftsman, turned into trophies for the BXL Tour, or decorated by Brussels-based artists.
  • Since 2022, introduction of a food recovery, redistribution and reuse system for leftover food from the market.
  • Waste sorting for traders.
  • Since 2022, improved PMC waste sorting (plastic, metal and drink cartons) for the public.
  • Reinforced cleaning teams from the City of Brussels and Brussels Major Events.
  • Since 2022, installation of dry toilets at Place De Brouckère.
  • Starting this year, eight used oil collection points are available throughout Winter Wonders.

Human-focused initiatives

  • Since 2022, extension of the Quality Label for Christmas Market artisans.
  • Facilities for persons with reduced mobility.
  • Study and reinforcement of a specific mobility plan adapted to the event period.
  • Creation of a family area, the Baby Corner.
  • Increasing collaboration with artists, associations and organisations from Brussels and across Belgium.
  • Support for the anti-street harassment campaign, including banners, staff and student training, and communication with traders.
  • Trilingual charter displayed around the ice rink.
  • Presence of a “Happy Team” ensuring the event’s infrastructure is kept as clean as possible (toilets, tables and standing areas).
